I own a gun. I own guns. I am also a peace-loving yoga-practicing vegetarian who is vehemently opposed to the death penalty. I don’t think these are contradictions. A friend of mine found it strange that sometimes, when I run long distances, I carry a concealed handgun. He thought it was inconsistent with my views on love, compassion, and peace. I disagree. I told him that if I wasn’t willing to protect myself, do I really love MYSELF? Love, peace, compassion … they’re for everyone, myself included. I will never punch a person if I am punched. In other words, I will never retaliate. I take “turn the other cheek” literally. But I will not allow myself to die at the hands of another person. I will do whatever is necessary to stop the violence, without trying to add to it. Although I will do everything in my power to prevent having to use deadly force, I will unflinchingly do so if necessary. I compare it to a large rock in the ocean upon which a ship is sunk. I don’t go looking to sink ships, but if a captain decides to ignore the warnings or his environment, it is HE who sinks the ship, not the rock. (If someone dies because I’m protecting myself, they committed suicide. I didn’t commit murder).
All of that said, let me be clear. First, I consider myself a constitutionalist. I believe the constitution, just as it was originally written, is what we should adhere to. We shouldn’t be twisting and bending its clear tenants to suit our modern schizophrenic agendas. Second, I think people can take anything too far. I have met several gun owners who stockpile because they fear their government; they fear the world is a dangerous place; they feel we are headed for a police state. I am not one of those. I own guns because I enjoy going to the range, and if I have to protect myself I can. No one is considered a nut if he carries a tire iron, car jack, jumper cables and few tools in his car at all times. But he might be a nut if he drives around in an armored vehicle. I believe in the right to own and use firearms. I believe the government should back the hell off. But I also believe some people live in a fearful bubble of despair, their only salvation appearing in superior firepower. These are the people I feel bad for. And are watchful of.
