When we were young we gullibly followed the ideals of previous generations. This doesn’t absolve us, but it helps to explain our motives.
I have experienced enough life, been to enough places, that I have sufficiently outgrown the tyrannical lies of patriotism, soul mates, Christianity, tradition, chivalry. I was initially sad, but I now face the brisk winter courageously with disciplined joy. I no longer believe in happiness but I can’t ignore the truth of being so fully absorbed in life that nothing and no one can truly remain an enemy.
