Despite your fanatic encouragement
otherwise, I refuse to kill the mosquito
that keeps me up all night,
buzzing like a field of cicadas
in just one ear.
I don’t eat meat,
I won’t strike a person even in retaliation,
I am opposed to war,
I am opposed to abortion,
I am opposed to capital punishment.
What do you find in me that could
possibly kill this mosquito?
Don’t tell anyone, though:
Part of me hopes the cat
will take notice, hunt it down,
and squash it beneath her paws.
But that’s just part of me.
Here kitty kitty!
