– my translation of the 51st Hexagram of the I Ching.
First the shock, then the relief,
for soon there will be balance.
We have been terrified by the thunder
but we must not flee for the hills
or onto the battlefield
for we will invite disaster.
We must recline quietly in the valley.
Initially there is much fear
but calm vigilance will soon harvest laughter
because the sage will appear to do his work.
He will shoulder the weight.
He will call his friends to examine themselves,
helping them to develop surrender;
teaching them how to forgive, even themselves;
bringing love to where there is fear;
teaching them to return to center.
